A Beginner’s Guide to Wig Care – The Do’s and Don’ts

Some people like to wash their wigs regularly while some don’t. The thing to keep in mind is, overwashing wigs can potentially damage them. This is especially if you are treating a wig like your natural human hair.

Instead, there are specific ways in which you should care for wigs which we will look at below.

Let us guide you through the steps you should follow while maintaining your wig:

Gently get rid of all the tangles in the wig using your fingers or a wide-toothed comb. Start at the bottom and work your way upwards to lessen any chances of locks tearing off.

  • Rinsing

Clog the drain of your sink or your bathtub and place the wig on the surface. Turn on the faucet and rinse the wig. Handle the wig with care but do not wring it or twist it.

  • Apply Shampoo To The Wig

Take a small amount of shampoo in your palm and work your way from the roots of the wig to the ends, but keep it away from the scalp area. Do not scrub the wig, as that will damage the strands.

The shampoo that you use should not be just any regular shampoo. Use clarified wig shampoo that has a less proactive effect on the wig and will preserve its luster. Or you can use a shampoo specifically designed for hairpieces.

Use a hand shower to remove the shampoo from the wig. Use a dry towel to soak the excess water to leave the wig just damp enough for applying conditioner.

  • Conditioning The Wig

Similarly, like shampoo, use a wig conditioner made especially for wigs or hair systems. Take small amounts and apply them to the length of the wig by combing them with your fingers. Let the conditioner sit on the wig for a few minutes, and then remove it using a hand shower or just hold the wig under a faucet.

  • Drying

Do not dry the wig with a blow dryer. Use a towel to soak the dripping water and then let it sit for a while until it is completely dry, after which you can style it in whichever way you want to. This process is called air drying.

Why Should You Not Use Regular Shampoo and Conditioner to Care for A Wig?

Hair Systems: Why You Should Not Use Regular Shampoo or Conditioner

The main reason behind this is that wigs/hair systems and natural human hair are very different from each other and cannot be treated in the same manner. Human hair is rich in natural oils that are generated within the scalp. This oil makes the dirt from the outside stick to our scalp when we go outside. This is why regular shampoos are composed of chemicals that help eliminate these oils from the scalp.

But in the case of wigs, there is just dirt and dust accumulation without any oil formation — as there is no scalp to produce these oils — and thus using a regular shampoo or conditioner will damage the wig in the sense that it will become dryer and start to fall off from the wig.

Conclusion

You may often hear that washing wigs often will damage them, and that is kind of true. Instead, wash your wigs carefully and only with the appropriate products. If you are worried about having to wear a dirty wig for fear of damage, then you might want to look into buying another wig that you can wear alternatively.
