Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates got an invitation from Buena Festa, the organizer of the Expo called “Festival Shop”. When I arrived at the venue while being guided, there was a big excitement with gorgeous pavilions lined up and pirates from all over the world flocked. There you can see the “worst generation” Kid, Badge, Hawkins, Bonnie, Bartolomeo, and Cavendish! Everyone has only one purpose, the centerpiece of the Expo, “Treasure hunt left by the Pirate King (Roger)”. The battle for treasure by pirates who want to get the treasure and make a name for themselves has been cut off!
The long-awaited latest movie of the popular national series “One Piece”, the movie version “One piece stampede eng sub” will be released at theaters nationwide from August 9th.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the start of the TV anime series, and this work was also produced to commemorate that milestone.
It is an “all-star movie” where all kinds of forces such as pirates, the Navy, and the Revolutionary Army gather together to bring together successive characters.
What is the story that is suitable for the 20th anniversary of the popular work, and how to meet the expectations of the fans who have run through the long days together? We talked to Takashi Otsuka, who was the director.
This work is a commemorative work that marks the 20th anniversary of the start of the TV anime broadcast of “One Piece”, but I think the production side was quite enthusiastic from the beginning.
Otsuka: At first, it was the 20th anniversary, so it wasn’t like this, but the story was, “Would you like to take over as a director because I’m doing a movie for” One Piece “?”
Of course, I knew that it was the 20th anniversary, but the momentum to push that was born later, and I was thinking about what kind of things could be put out to make it something that everyone could enjoy as the 20th anniversary.
It’s been talked about being an all-star of all the powers, but is this conscious of the 20th anniversary?
Otsuka: It was the idea of producer Hiroki Koyama, but he said, “Let’s create a pirate expo and bring all the forces together.” It sounds interesting, but I thought, “This is hard.”
Even though there are already settings for the TV series, the more characters there are, the harder it will be to work. It involved the staff, and it was difficult to swing my head vertically.
However, the project itself is very attractive, and it is not a project that can be done at any time. When I returned to the 20th-anniversary work, I thought that Koyama-kun’s idea was still good. In the story, there are many homages to the famous scenes of the series so far. Is this also conscious of the 20th anniversary? Otsuka: I was quite aware of this. From the script stage, we were particular about how to make “One Piece” enjoyable for people who like it and how to compose the homage scene. I thought that if there were many such scenes, I would enjoy it, so I intend to include it as much as possible. The homages that remind you of the famous scenes made me feel nostalgic as if they were tracing the journey of Luffy and his friends. We have introduced a large number of characters and prepared a showcase for each, but wasn’t this difficult to configure? Otsuka: Well, it was hard to decide on the composition. Even if I, Koyama-Kun, and Atsuhiro Tomioka, the scriptwriter, think about various things and think that it worked, there may be a backset that we do not even know. So I checked with Mr. Oda and Shueisha and corrected the lines of the characters.
It’s also basic, but it was really hard because I had to create and compose the excitement as a drama while keeping it firmly on the scale of the movie.
